Sans Sugar, Sans Guilt, Enjoy your Chocolate!

What happens between the harvest of raw cacao beans and the production of most American chocolate bars is a lot of processing and a lot of additives. Sandra Giraldo, a Colombian native, realized that she had food sensitivities to many of the additives, such as sugar, milk and soy. But she had such great memories of eating “real chocolate” that she wanted to find a way to enjoy it again. Thus, Enjoyful Foods was born.

Sandra uses raw organic Dominican cacao powder that has not been subjected to high-heat processing, and she adds spices to complement the bitterness of the cacao and to boost its healthful properties. The first of Enjoyful’s four varieties is the Original, with some coconut sugar for sweetener, since it is a low-glycemic sweetener. For the other three, consumers must add their own preferred sweetener. Golden (with turmeric and other spices) and Superfood are the most popular. Spiced has cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves.

Sandra strongly believes in the healthful properties of these powders, which she recommends not only for cold and hot drinks, but also in desserts or on oatmeal, granola or yogurt.
