Have you ever wanted to pass along a favorite recipe? A health tip? Something that made you feel refreshed? That’s what happened for Jessica Gavigan and Alex Bello when they started making cold-pressed juices for themselves … and then for family and friends … and now for their business, Ocean State Juice.
“We got an energy boost, a mood boost, overall better health,” says Gavigan. “It’s taken us away from drinking anything else. But even to mix our juices with your favorite spirit, it’s nice to have something that’s natural and fresh.”
Gavigan and Bello try to get organic, local and seasonal produce whenever they can. They peel, chop and juice veggies and fruits at Town Made, a commercial kitchen facility in South Kingstown, and turn out 300 (12-ounce) bottles a week.
In addition, they still work part time at restaurant jobs, formerly at Matunuck Oyster Bar—where they got strong encouragement to market their juices—and now at the newly opened fred in Providence.
At two farmers markets (South Kingstown and Aquidneck Island Wednesdays) and Providence Flea, plus home deliveries, Gavigan and Bello offer up to 10 juice options, with two year-round favorites: Green Light and Blue Dream. The former has apple, pear, cucumber, spinach and lemon; the latter is pineapple, apple, lemon, lime and blue spirulina, an algae superfood.
