In the dropping temps and shortening days of early winter, it’s a time for the warmth of community. The co-owners of Sawyer’s Market have taken that to heart, turning their enterprise into a gathering place to sip and sup, as well as a neighborhood store for last-minute staples. With backgrounds in management and being the owner-chef of a North Shore establishment, respectively, Lydia Emmons and Mary Vyn have fused their creative talents for menus at breakfast, lunch, dinner and post-prandial drinks, with a beverage board that includes local brews and an expansive selection of imported wines. For both menus and staples, they use many local sources, such as Rhed’s sauces, Maine Grains, Fox Smoked Fish, Dune Brothers Seafood, Navad Bakery and Toasters Collective Bakery.
The design inside the café “pays tribute to the neighborhood and its architectural character,” in Emmons’s words. The restored tin ceiling, the moldings, the white drop lights, the large windows and the dark wood surfaces—all offer the feel of the Victorian houses and buildings on West Broadway. Comfy banquettes, fabric-covered stools and a long library table complete the stay-a-while vibe at Sawyer’s.
Plans are in the works for Christmas dinners-to-go (order by Dec. 15); Feast of the Seven Fishes, Dec. 21; and a six-course Vegetable Dinner, Jan. 12.
