Where are you from? How do you describe the place you grew up to people who’ve never been there?
I am from East Greenwich, RI! Growing up, I have enjoyed beautiful bay views, a small-town community, amazing restaurants and some of the best coffee shops in the whole state (which surely started my caffeine addiction at a young age!).
What are you studying /or what did you study in college and how is it shaping your year?
I am an English Major and a French Studies and Art History Double Minor at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. As an English Major, I frequently conduct research and write detailed papers, but have yet to write outside of an academic setting. I truly am enjoying applying my learned skills from my concentration to my work with Edible Rhody! I am learning a lot and am excited to grow!
What are you most excited to learn/do/see in this internship?
I am most excited to learn about local spots that I have yet to visit—though Rhode Island is small, our food scene is packed with many hidden gems that I have yet to explore. I have had some of my favorite meals here in Rhode Island, and I am eager to learn about and advocate for small businesses. Here in the smallest state, small businesses are at the heart of everything.
What’s one question you have right now about local food in RI?
With so many resources available in Rhode Island, how can we, as a community, reduce food waste and support those experiencing food insecurity? With 38% of Rhode Island households remaining food insecure, what initiatives are possible to emphasize the importance of good, healthy food for all?
What is your favorite way to enjoy food (cooking, dining out, shopping the farmers market, reading cookbooks, watching cooking videos, etc.)?
My favorite way to enjoy food will always be with friends and family. Since I was little, I have loved sitting down at a table, spending time enjoying delicious dishes and relishing quality time with loved ones. Whether at home enjoying my mom’s unbelievable dinners or at a favorite restaurant in town, in my house, food is our love language.
What’s your spirit vegetable—and why?
I would have to say a cucumber—refreshing and light, can be prepared simply or dressed up. It can be a lot of things, but it’s always good.
