Little Shop of Groceries

Despite being named for the main character in the play Little Shop of Horrors, Seymour Foods is neither scary nor wacky. Co-owners Lisa Kellogg and Chloe Cartagena have, however, poured a lot of imagination into their small grocery enterprise: in seeking out local farmers who treat their animals and their soil with care; in plunging into retail ownership from jobs in trucking and food service; and in leaping from pop-ups to a storefront.

Kellogg and Cartagena are grateful for their dedicated Providence/Pawtucket customer base as well as the South County folk to whom they deliver. “We prioritize local sources but also quality, like getting unsprayed apples from Massachusetts and New Hampshire,” Kellogg says. In-state suppliers include Provencal Bakery, Sanford Farms, Gnarly Vines Farm, Cedar Valley Heritage Farm, Little Poultry Shed in the Woods, plus Wright’s Dairy Farm and Narragansett Creamery. Products such as Rhed’s hot sauces, Chi Kitchen’s kimchi and prepared foods from SoCo Vedge are also stocked.

At a time when consumers want to support local endeavors, Kellogg asks: “What’s more small-business than two girls who opened a grocery store?”
