Eliza Green is a first grade teacher at a local charter school in Cranston and has always had a love for talking and writing about the best local food, coffee and drinks. She hopes to continue working in food journalism as well as continue her teaching career.
Where are you from? How do you describe the place you grew up to people who've never been there?
I grew up in a small town in Connecticut (Pomfret) and moved to Haverford, Pennsylvania when I was 9.  I would say Pomfret is a town that smells like a farm (in a good way) with one coffee shop, one restaurant, and one grocery store where you’ll likely bump into someone you know. Haverford is a 20 minute train ride from Philadelphia, giving it more of a classic suburban town feel. I had great experiences in both places!

What are you studying /or what did you study in college and how is it shaping your year?
I studied Elementary Education and Psychology at the University of Vermont. I graduated in 2022 and now work as a first grade teacher at Achievement First Iluminar in Cranston, RI. I have always loved working with kids and every day as a teacher brings something new and unexpected!

What are you most excited to learn/do/see in this internship?
I am most excited to explore more of the local food scene in Rhode Island. I have only lived here for a year now so I know there is so much more to learn and taste out there! I am also very excited to learn more about the magazine industry, social media, and improve my writing skills.

What's one question you have right now about local food in RI?
One question I have about local food in RI is where can one find the best cider and donuts for the fall! I love everything about the flavors of fall so I would love to know who specializes in those things.

What is your favorite way to enjoy food (cooking, dining out, shopping the farmers market, reading cookbooks, watching cooking videos, etc.)?
I love watching cooking videos and dining out! I love Bon Appétit and New York Times Cooking on YouTube. I also love Binging with Babish on YouTube. I am trying to become more of a cook myself but it’s a journey. I also love dining out and trying new restaurants and bars with friends and family.

What's your spirit vegetable - and why?
I would say my spirit vegetable is butternut squash because I love the fall and I consider myself to be a comforting and warm person. Squash is also very versatile and can be cooked, baked, roasted, sauteed, and pureed into soups. I am a pretty versatile person and have various interests that don’t necessarily relate to each other. For example, I played soccer in college and I also love Broadway musicals!
