Teff is a 4,000-year-old Ethiopian seed grain (tiniest in the world) and, because of its high protein and mineral content, it has fueled world-class Olympic and major marathon runners from Ethiopia. But when Ethiopian native Saron Mechale came to Brown University, she quickly realized that she could use the food she’d grown up eating—teff—to also correct “Americans’ perception of Africa and Ethiopia.” Her goal with goTeff, a cracker-chip-like snack she’s christened “crisps,” is to eventually create a supply chain to support teff farmers in her country. And she has partnered with Girls Gotta Run to invest in the education of Ethiopian girls and women. Mechale bakes nutty-tasting teff to create her crisps (no oil or added sugar). Flavors are plain, strawberry-coconut, blueberry-vanilla and chickpea-garlic, and the gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free crisps can be used wherever crunch and added energy are desired: Enjoy with granola, atop yogurt, or salads, on ice cream or just out of hand.

goTeff is available online and through WhatsGood for home delivery, at local farmers markets (Mt. Hope and Aquidneck Growers), Providence Flea, Urban Greens and Plant City. Visit goTeff.com.
