Local Food Delivery by Bicycle—Now Rolling in Providence
The Covid-19 crisis has more people than ever relying on delivery services for food and goods. But shipment doesn’t always have to be by car––don’t forget we are still in the middle of a climate crisis! Delivery doesn’t have to come from a major third-party app like GrubHub and DoorDash, which are known to use restaurant names without their consent and take a chunk of their profits. If you live in Providence and want or need to #stayhome, #knockitoff and get your groceries and takeout meals delivered in a low-impact way by local residents, check out these three bicycle delivery services:
Urban Greens Co-op Market and a cadre of collaborators are now offering a delivery extension of Urban Greens’ curbside pickup program––by bike! They are currently offering bike delivery for a $10 fee to ZIP codes 02907, 02906 and 02903. Delivery days are Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9 am and noon until capacity is reached, but they hope to see the program grow. The program is a collaboration between Rhode Island Pride (an LGBTQIA+ advocacy organization that also distributes food by car), Harvest Cycle Compost (a bicycle-powered composting service), Mission Electric Bike (a Fox Point bike shop specializing in electric bikes) and the Providence Streets Coalition (a safe-streets advocacy organization). These entities decided to team up to better connect immunocompromised residents of Providence to groceries from Urban Greens. Order here from Urban Greens.
You can get your “Knock it Off” blend White Electric Coffee beans from Dash Delivery, a Providence bike courier company. (Dash also delivers Knock it Off T-shirts available from Frog & Toad!) Coffee bean orders placed by 10 am the day before will be delivered by Dash to all Providence addresses. For a sweetheart deal, use the code DASH at checkout and White Electric will chip in to reduce your delivery fee to $3.50! Order “Knock it Off” coffee here.
