This summer, be sure to visit to the Museum of Work & Culture for Mishpakha: Jewish History of Woonsocket, a new, original exhibition celebrating local narratives of worship, entrepreneurship and social life in Woonsocket’s Jewish community. The exhibition will remain in the museum’s changing gallery until August 26. Beginning in the 1860s with the arrival of Woonsocket’s first recorded Jewish resident, the city became a hub for Jewish immigrants in Northern Rhode Island. Mishpakha presents the history of the Jewish community in a way that will reach both those deeply familiar with Judaism and those who are less knowledgeable about Jewish traditions.

As part of the show, the museum has reprinted a 1947 community cookbook, filled with traditional Jewish recipes and “everyday” recipes from 1940s kitchens. Get your copy while visiting the exhibit and head on a wonderful culinary nostalgia trip thanks to the members of the Woonsocket Hebrew Ladies Aid and Sisterhood of Congregation B’nai Israel who first printed the book.
