With the current trend for vegan and/or gluten-free foods, Maize ‘N’ Manna, with its motto of “whole foods for your whole life,” is right in the swing of things.

Owner Susan Champouillon had been searching for a way to get economical and organic bulk grains and herbs without driving 20 miles or ordering online. Her solution was to open a store in the heart of Westerly, with attractive glass jars of grains (six kinds of rice), herbs, nuts, seeds, dried fruits, beans (three kinds of lentils), flours, pastas and more, all available by the ounce (five-cent discount if you bring your own container). One table is dedicated to gluten items; the shelves surrounding that table all contain gluten-free items.

Champouillon also oversees a kitchen that turns out fresh juices; coffee, tea and hot chocolate; and a daily-changing menu of soups, salads and entrées. An intimate and inviting café area has window seats, a hydroponic garden in the summer, cookbooks to peruse and background music from local artists. Visit them on Facebook for daily specials.
