After cooking 96% vegetarian for the past 30 years, after a six-year stint at Sweet Cakes Bakery and after only a month of cooking for the dear departed South County Co-op’s café, Kathy Curley decided that the time had come to open her own place: Auntie’s Kitchen. The younger staff at Sweet Cakes had taken to calling her “Auntie,” thus the name. And despite the flowered pillows on the banquette and the knickknacks in the window, Kathy is no stuffy auntie. With seating for a baker’s dozen, a lot of her breakfast customers take pastries (delicious scones), granola, frittata or avocado toast with their organic coffee or herb tea to go. The any-meal favorite is the Buddha Bowl—brown rice, kale, roasted sweet potatoes, chickpeas, nuts, shredded carrots and beets, all nicely dressed in herbs and citrus. The soups and salads change daily, with tabouleh, green salads and tofu salads often on tap. But ... for meat eaters, there are also sandwiches: ham and Swiss (with fig spread) and turkey with cheddar and mango chutney. And for those inclined to indulge: cookies, brownies and “Wonder Bars.”
