The Magic of the Jin-Jin Mule

The Gin-Gin Mule [sic] is one of the most iconic cocktail recipes of the 21st century. Muddled mint, gin, lime juice and ginger beer are an illustrious and refreshing combination, leaving ample room for experimentation. The original recipe, by mixologist Audrey Saunders and her incredibly influential bar program at Pegu Club in New York City, inspired bartenders across the country to spin countless riffs on her modern classic. My favorite rendition, the Jin-Jin Mule is my nod to a mystical Jin (genie) by consolidating the lime, ginger and … wait for it … green cardamom into one magical syrup, ready for action! Muddle mint in the bottom of your mule cup, add ice, syrup, gin and top with sparkling water for a most revitalizing tipple. Where do you find this magical syrup, you ask? I like Bootblack Brand’s Ginger Cardamom Lime Cocktail Syrup for the task. It’s rare that I opt for a bottled syrup, but this beautiful nectar is a Rhode Island–made product that should be part of any Rhode Islander’s bar kit—perfect for unexpected guests and impromptu parties. Swap in vodka or tequila if you prefer and you’ve got a solid signature drink in your grasp.

I love this Bootblack Brand syrup for occasions when I set up a DIY bar at home. Set out the ingredients next to a shot glass/jigger and a little recipe card and rejoice in delicious drinks flowing all evening. You can even skip the gin for a solid nonalcoholic option.
