Though Aquidneck Meat & Provisions has been a Middletown fixture for more than 20 years, it took on a new look two years ago, when John and Sheryl Callaghan, who also own Bellevue Wine & Spirits (Newport) and Milk & Honey (Tiverton), bought the business and began to put their special stamp on it. Lots of cheeses, from as far away as Lithuania (also France, Italy, Spain and Holland) and Point Reyes, California, and as near as Narragansett Creamery—and Vermont, too. Lots of charcuterie choices to complement any cheese board. Lots of prepared foods, from long-time manager Angelo Pirri’s “stuffed meatballs” (fist-sized and “stuffed” with various meats, cheeses and herbs) to Sheryl’s savory potato salad (with capers) to part-time chef (and Fluke sous chef) William Corletto’s wide range of cold salads and pick-up-and-go suppers. Five daily sandwich specials are posted: steak, bistro filet, grilled chicken, eggplant parmesan and Grandma Pirri’s Italian tuna. They’ve got fresh cuts of steak, chicken and housemade sausage, plus a cornucopia of gourmet accompaniments is available—many are Rhode Island–made. Plenty to please any boater, polo player or harried household cook.
