Jan Faust Dane in every-day-of-December sparkle is leading her beloved kitchen store on Hope Street into its 10th year in 2022.

Kitchenware, Tabletop and Barware Served up with Conviviality for a Community of Cooks and Eaters

From industry pros to serious home cooks to those just learning how to fry an egg, there is something for every cook and eater at Stock Culinary Goods in Providence. Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2022, Stock has become a fixture on the Hope Street corner where owner and founder Jan Faust Dane reigns over the high-energy conviviality, the riotous display of kitchen tools, tabletop accessories and grocery staples— and where, in her words, a shared love of food binds everyone together.

“Every day brings a spirited and familiar stream of people coming through the store seeking out everything from spatulas to Bundt pans, spice grinders and chocolates to hostess gifts, pantry essentials and cooking advice,” says Dane. “I like to think we provide a welcoming neighborhood environment with a little something for everyone— and, if not products, then lively conversation!”

Brushing off the hard work it takes to keep an independent retail business running these days—and even more so back in 2020— Dane says it’s her customers who got her through the pandemic. Ask anyone who shops at Stock and they’ll tell you it was Jan who got them through when she began offering grocery staples, including milk, butter and eggs, sold out of the store’s side window along with the knives, potholders, cutting boards, bakeware and, yes, cocktail mixers that her customers were seeking.

Local chefs, often small business owners themselves, value Stock as an extension of Rhode Island’s culinary coterie. “There’s so many good things I can say about Stock,” says Jason “JT” Timothy, chef/co-owner of Troop in Providence. “Outside of having some really cool stuff, Jan and her team are some of the nicest folks you’ll come across. I go there for the knives, books and other kitchen tools but sometimes I simply stop in to have some Nitro [coffee] and a quick conversation—it’s the community vibe that sets it apart. When I walk in there, I don’t feel like a customer.”

Whether one is setting up a wedding registry for lifetime kitchenware or looking for advice on the best proofing basket or the merits of a particular oyster knife, seasoned advice is given freely and amiably. Local makers are front and center on Stock store shelves, including Beehive Handmade (kitchen tools and tabletop), Michelle Phaneuf Ceramics (pinch bowls, mugs, vessels) and Zuerner Handmade (wooden Gratitude boards) plus provisions including Wright’s Dairy, Pat’s Pastured eggs, Rhed’s hot sauce, ZPita Chips, Borealis Coffee, Aura’s Chocolate and much more. National and international brands such as Nordic Ware (baking equipment), Made In (American-made stainless cookware) and Kuhn Rikon (Swiss-made kitchen prep tools) are chosen for quality, durability and green practices.

“Holidays are my favorite—the celebratory cooking projects and all the creative gift giving— I love seeing the combinations our customers put together!” says Dane. “It’s unbelievably rewarding to be a part of it, to hear what people are cooking and eating, to know our customers—and to be that neighborhood store.”
