Rise for the Coffee
Though the Civil War–era carriage house has served many functions, its current incarnation as a coffee bar, Rise ’N Shine, took shape in builder Neal Kaplan’s mind gradually. He wanted to “jump start” the Smith Hill neighborhood and has created a cozy haven with soft cushions, velvet pillows and banquette seating. He knew the space had once been a cobbler’s shop and wanted to pay tribute to his cobbler great-grandfather. And he and wife, Karen, are self-described “coffee snobs,” so it’s all about the special drinks, especially the coffee incarnations. The Big Spoon, for instance, has organic espresso, organic caramel syrup, maple sugar, raw sugar and a choice of steamed milk, served in glass or ceramic cups—only the to-go cups are cardboard, New-York-style Greek ones. Lavender Fields, a latté sweetened with organic lavender syrup, topped with lavender maqui berry cold foam and lemon zest, is their most popular. There are also teas, cocoa and cold drinks, plus daily-fresh pastries from Knead Doughnuts, L’Artisan Café and Bagel Gourmet. Cobbler homage is evident in 350 shoe lasts (wooden forms) covering one wall and hanging beside the door. Sip your drink from a seat on the shoeshine stand, a replica from Providence’s old train station, white oak and leather, with brass grommets.
