You Scream, I Scream, Even the Dog Screams for Ice Cream
Throughout high school and college, Warren Sternberg worked at South County’s legendary small-batch creamery, Brickley’s, where he learned to love making ice cream. After a corporate stint, he realized he wanted his own small-business venture, specifically ice cream. Thus, six years ago, he and wife Jess opened Clementine’s, in East Greenwich (EG), named after their Chocolate Lab. In 2020, they opened a second location, in Middletown, and this spring, needing a bigger production site and better parking, they moved the EG operation to a spot on Route 2 (the former Beacon Diner). Though there are fewer flavors in the Middletown store (22 vs. 32 in EG), they include specials such as red velvet cheesecake, lemon blueberry, basil, lavender and white chocolate chip, though customer favorites still run to mint Oreo, coffee Heath Bar and cookie dough. There’s also a dairy-free option, made with coconut-oat milk or almond milk. Canine patrons can choose vanilla or banana yogurt, topped with dog biscuits. Oh, and yes, there’s clementine sorbet.
