After many years as a Rhody bartender who fell in love with mixology, Victor Regino is now instructing bartenders about his own brand of a rum-and-coconut-cream drink called Papi’s Coquito. “Because it’s my grandmother’s recipe, it’s especially great to be making it and distributing it in liquor stores, breweries and restaurants all over the state,” Victor says. Coquito is a special-occasion drink in many Dominican and Puerto Rican households. Papi’s Coquito also has a bit of cinnamon and vanilla, a proprietary blend, and when friends and family started asking him to make it, he thought, “I really have something here.” With 15% alcohol, it can become any kind of cocktail: espresso martini or frozen coquito or mixed with mango and passion fruit juice—just a few of Victor’s suggestions. Papi’s is blended and bottled in Kentucky and based in Pawtucket. Their very first shipment—in January 2021, to two Rhode Island liquor stores—sold out within 24 hours.
