New Harvest in a New Space
From a drafty shed in Rumford, to a Pawtucket mill building plus a café and bar in Providence’s Arcade, to the new and spacious Farm Fresh food hub in Providence, New Harvest Coffee owners Rik Kleinfeldt and Paula Anderson have stayed true to their mission: to offer customers single-origin coffees (from Latin America and East Africa), house-roasted beans and custom blends. In 2013, they added unusual beers and whiskeys, and they will do the same at their new location. The café’s outdoor seating will double its size, but more important to Kleinfeldt is having the roastery and café in the same building, using a brand new computerized roaster from California and updating old methods of “running a wholesale company as if it was a coffee bar.” In New Harvest’s first year, they roasted 30,000 pounds; in the past year, 400,000 pounds; with the new roasting system, they hope to reach one million pounds a year! Kleinfeldt stresses that New Harvest will never roast for burnt flavors and will always go for a hint of sweetness, whether it’s light, medium or dark. Try the ever-popular Steamroller.
