Old-School Green Line Apothecary is New Again
After two years of booming success in li’l ol’ Wakefield, Green Line Apothecary has opened another branch on North Main Street in Providence with its signature offerings of a full-service pharmacy (including immunizations, consultations and even free delivery in an antique van) and a line of “sundries, remedies and essentials” that features homeopathic and many locally made products. But the real drawing point is the 1940sstyle soda fountain, with old-fashioned egg creams, lime rickeys and root-beer floats, plus seasonally rotating ice cream flavors.
Green Line is a family business, with co-owners Ken and Christina Procaccianti (who met on Boston’s Green Line subway). Christina is the resident pharmacist, now overseeing an expanding staff of other pharmacists and assistants. “The city calls for a larger-scale version of what we were doing in South County,” explains Ken. “So we’re twice the size and we carry twice as much. We also try to price-match the chains, in both prescriptions and products.” He’s pleased that the space they rehabilitated used to be a Benny’s in the ‘50s and ‘60s and then a pet shop for 40 years: “We like the idea of another mom-and-pop store in this space.”
