The Perfect Mixer
Three Game-Changing DIY Syrups for the Holidays
I firmly believe that every host should be showered with gifts, especially during the holidays. To express gratitude to our gracious hosts this year, I’ve devised a trio of simple syrup recipes to streamline the oftentimes harried process of making rounds of drinks for guests.
This winter, my favorite recipe of all is a garnet-hued simple syrup called Cranberry Giddy-Up. Doesn’t it even sound fun? Infused with mulling spices and orange citrus, Cranberry Giddy-Up is just tart and warming enough to keep you sipping and smiling. Add a splash to a gin and tonic for color and flair or make the Giddy-Up Spritz by topping the syrup with a few ounces of chilled sparkling wine (or soda water) and a festive garnish made up of a cocktail pick speared with sugared cranberries.
Are herbal drinks your jam? The Rosemary Citrus Syrup made with sugar, fresh rosemary and lemon zest gussies up anything from seltzer water to a vodka soda in mere moments. Try your hand at making Rosie’s Lemon Drop with vodka, Rosemary Citrus Syrup and fresh lemon juice; the culmination, a bright, fruity wave of citrus and herbs on the palate.
If you lean towards agave spirits, whip up a batch of Grapefruit Cardamom Syrup for a round of Cardamom Palomas, certain to please the Margarita fans in the room. The added punch of green cardamom is both citrusy and spicy, while pink grapefruit adds a kiss of sunshine that we can truly appreciate when the sun starts setting at 4:30 pm.
On my quest for the perfect host gift this year, I’ll reach just beyond the lovely tea towels and candles toward a pretty glass bottle, soon to be filled with a glowing, fragrant simple syrup. I may not always feel fully prepared for the holidays, but this is a pretty good place to start.
