Viva la Pupusa!
The blue awning on the front of Leo’s Market lets customers know this is a full-service market, with a convenience store up front (drinks, snacks, lottery tickets), a small market in the aisles (everything from a small pressure cooker to bags of rice and beans) and a neighborhood taqueria in the back. Juan and Alba Campos named the establishment for their son when they opened the market in 2009 and kept the name for “Leo’s Kitchen” when the eatery opened three years ago. Alba explains that customers were begging the couple (originally from El Salvador) to offer home-cooked Latin street food, such as tacos, tamales, burritos and quesadillas. Juan’s experience in restaurants (including The Mooring) helped them do just that and to have Salvadoran pupusas on the regular menu. These are savory grilled corn tortillas filled with cheese and served with a fermented cabbage relish. In support of other Latino establishments in the area, Leo’s gets Guatemalan, Salvadoran and Brazilian pastries and bread from Providence and nearby Massachusetts. They stock hard-to-find Mexican spices, Goya products, fresh produce and even unusual frozen foods, such as guava and guanabana pulp. This winter, they will be expanding into the space next door for more seating. In warmer weather, enjoy tables outside.
