This Fauxgroni recipe vexed me for months before I was able to nail the bittersweet balance in the classic cocktail, the Negroni. Though it’s possible to make a spiritfree syrup that resembles Campari, it’s pretty labor intensive and, quite frankly, not as good as Sanbitter soda, a bottled nonalcoholic version of Campari soda by Pellegrino you can find in Italian specialty stores or order online. Lyre’s Dry London Spirit adds body here and botanical balance with a baseline of juniper, notes of orange blossom and citrus zest. It’s the magic of currant syrup that delivers the juicy herbaceous notes similar to sweet vermouth—fruity but distinctly aromatic. In glorious garnet hue, the Fauxgroni tips her hat to her spirited cousin.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces Lyre’s Dry London Spirit (or Seedlip Garden 108)
  • 2 ounces Sanbitter soda (available at Venda Ravioli or online)
  • 2 ounces Spiced Currant Syrup*
  • Orange peel ribbon for garnish

Instructions

Add ingredients (except garnish) to a mixing glass, stir over ice for 10 seconds, strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with orange peel. Makes 1 drink.

*Spiced Currant Syrup: Heat 12 ounces currant juice in a small saucepan, add 2 large, peeled medallions fresh ginger; 1 teaspoon whole allspice; 6 whole cloves; and simmer 10 minutes over low heat. Remove from heat, let cool, strain, discard solids and funnel into a clean Mason jar. Refrigerate 2 weeks.
