That motto at Crepe Corner rings true. Chef Natacha Legein, along with her mother (and head baker) Chantal Mafuta, offer truly alluring Belgian dishes in the heart of Pawtuxet Village— from large but delicate crepes stuffed with savory or sweet fillings to authentic Belgian waffles, with toppings sweet or savory, such as roast turkey with homemade cranberry sauce in winter. Legein’s heritage is Belgian and Congolese; her husband/co-owner, Anthony Adagboyi, is Nigerian; they have three young children, each diagnosed as “on the spectrum.” After fleeing civil war in the Congo, enduring her father’s death in Belgium, immigrating at 19 to the United States by herself and, just two years ago, recovering from a life-threatening accident, Legein understands deeply the healing power of healthy food. For her own health, she follows a plant-based diet; for her children, gluten-free, dairy-free; for her customers, nut free, as well as plant-based options, are available. “A lot of what we serve is tied to the stories of what we have in our own household,” she explains. But that doesn’t inhibit her creativity with Belgian specialties or baked goods. A gingerbread spread pays homage to the Belgian ginger biscuit Speculoos. Galette des Rois (king cake) is served year-round. With an emphasis on local, seasonal produce and scratch-made sauces, Crepe Corner is, indeed, très bon!
