At long last, Urban Greens Food Co-op, an 8,000- square-foot cooperative food market in Providence’s West End, is due to open in June. Urban Greens’ goal, says Cooperative Council Member Philip Trevvett, is to serve our community by creating a product mix that reflects the surrounding neighborhoods’ diversity; promoting healthy foods in informational ways; offering a community space for cooking demos and classes; and creating affordable food options.

For those who prefer buying local, expect products from The Backyard Food Company, Baffoni’s Poultry Farm, New Harvest Coffee Roasters, Pat’s Pastured, and Sanctuary Herbs of Providence, among others.

Unlike traditional markets, “Urban Greens is fundamentally different,” says Trevvett. “We are invested in the people who have invested in us.” Although shoppers need not be co-op members, now at 1,250 and counting, the co-op encourages membership: “The more the merrier,” Trevvett says. Members steer the direction of the co-op with their votes and partake in special member-only sales.

Urban Greens is committed to creating affordable options for all shoppers. “Our goal is to be competitive with other grocery stores in Providence,” says Trevvett, who promises an array of artisanal and fancy food products, farmers market goods, produce and more.
